Reefer-Island in the sun

Talking about the Caribbean Sea the first thing you would think of surely is not a reefer container terminal. Nevertheless, maybe one of the most important projects for the Costa Rican economy is currently evolving off the coast of Limon Moin. The second largest reefer container port in the world is emerging and will set a new standard in terminal productivity and efficiency; through digital reefer management. With strong partnership and support, a state-of-the-art system is being rolled out by international operating technology company IDENTEC SOLUTIONS, headquartered in Austria.

One hundred and sixty nautical miles from the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal, construction is underway for the new APM Terminals’ shipping container port in Moin. This new port is the largest infrastructure project in history for Costa Rica. With an investment from APM Terminals of over 992 million US Dollars, this is the largest foreign investment ever made in the region and will significantly improve the country’s infrastructure and trade competitiveness.

The former Limon Moin port was only capable of handling vessels with about 2,500 TEUs. The new port will be able to handle ships three times the size, with around 8,000 TEUs and in a second phase of the extension, it could even see vessels with up to 15,000 TEUs. The increased capacity will allow the new port to handle larger ships and thereby the country’s continuous growing refrigerated trade.

The wireless solutions provider IDENTEC SOLUTIONS will supply its CTAS Reefer System to handle the remote monitoring and control of reefer containers for the new facility when opened in 2019. CTAS Reefer is linked to the TOS system (Navis N4) and offers a built-in reporting module.
